More Kelly Clarkson album drama - Maybe Clive is the evil one....
May 30, 2007 -- NOTE to music industry legend Clive Davis: Stop trashing Kelly Clarkson - you are making yourself look bad.
"Clive is furious because Kelly has assumed total artistic control over her new album and refuses his suggestions," according to an insider at Sony BMG, the parent of Clarkson's label, RCA.
Davis, who runs Sony BMG, slammed Clarkson at a company retreat in April, saying she can't produce hits.
And music industry insiders were dumbfounded when Davis took the stage during the "American Idol" finale to plug Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee's new singles, but failed to mention Clarkson's third album, "My December," which debuts in June. Instead, Davis promoted the songwriters for one of Clarkson's hits, "Since U Been Gone."
Our insider said, "She wrote all of the second album herself - including the hits 'Because of You,' 'Behind These Hazel Eyes' and 'Walk Away.' Clive hated 'Because of You' so much, he would routinely mock it in meetings. It was one of her most successful singles."
Clarkson is not only one of Sony BMG's most profitable artists, having sold close to 15 million albums - she is also not a diva.
She hasn't demanded to renegotiate her deal with the label, our source said, even though "she only gets like $250,000 an album when she could get millions. She refuses to take more money because she wants artistic control. And she has always turned out to be right. If Clive had had his way, she wouldn't have sold nearly as many albums as she did.
"We are appalled he is picking apart one of our own acts - and one that we all love."
The source added, "Kelly wanted to make a deeply personal record. Here's an artist who didn't demand more money, who handed in her record on time in January, after making him millions, and now he rips her? The music business is collapsing, and this is why. They won't let people put out their real music. This is about his huge ego."
But a Davis pal said, "Clive gave her 'Hazel Eyes' and 'Walk Away' and he gave her the production company to help make 'Because of You' a hit. We pay millions for the albums. This is incorrect."
Clarkson's rep didn't return calls, and Davis' rep declined comment.

ABC’s “Good Morning America” has cut the “Today” lead in half and now trails by just 310,000 viewers. “CBS Early Show” has made an even a bigger jump percentagewise, although it’s still a distant third. With Katie Couric faring badly at “CBS Evening News,” and Rosie O’Donnell, who replaced Vieira, already gone at “The View,” it looks like everybody should have stayed where they were. We hear the front-runner to replace O’Donnell is comic Kathy Griffin. And if Vieira stumbles further, look for Amy Robach to take her place. We’d be surprised if CBS boss Les Moonves wasn’t already looking for a loophole in Couric’s contract so he could move her to the “CBS Early Show.”

PARTY animal Kid Rock might be getting an earful from Brad Pitt after hosting an all-night bash which disturbed the actor's peace. Brad, 43, and other half Angelina Jolie were left fuming when bad-boy Kid's noisy do kept the couple and their four children awake. The Ocean's 13 star - who attended its glittering red carpet premiere in Cannes on Thursday night - has been staying at the £2,500-a-night Hotel Du Cap. But it proved to be no tranquil retreat... "Kid Rock was DJing a party at the Eden Roc complex of the Hotel Du Cap," a hotel source tells us. "Kid had downed several Southern Comforts and was playing all his rowdy favourites, like Aerosmith's Walk This Way. He had the sound system up as far as it would go and the bass was so loud that the whole building seemed to be shaking." Brad and Ange's two-year-old daughter Zahara woke up first and started screaming. Then the other three kids - Pax, three, Shiloh, one, and five-year-old Maddox - were roused and started crying. "Brad and Ange were upset to say the least," adds our source. "To suddenly have all their kids woken up by the thudding bass was too much. Brad was on the phone to reception, demanding that the music be turned off immediately. The couple thought that they'd be getting an apology and that Kid Rock's sound system would then be unplugged. "Instead there was a hotel worker there offering a tray of earplugs! Meanwhile, Kid's party carried on as before. "It was like something out of a comedy film." The party - with guests including Naomi Campbell, Flavio Briatore, David Furnish and Quincy Jones - eventually finished at around 6am. A hotel worker at reception admitted that the entertainment had been "quite loud". But a Du Cap spokesman said: "We don't comment on any of our clients."

Simmons, Wife In Libel Rap
Details scant as couple targets celebrity magazine publisher
MAY 22--Music and fashion mogul Russell Simmons and his wife have filed a libel action against the publishers of In Touch magazine, but details of how the pair was allegedly maligned by the celebrity weekly are not contained in a court filing. In a New York State Supreme Court summons, Simmons and Kimora Lee Simmons name Bauer Publishing and In Touch's two top editors as defendants in what is described as "an action for libel." However, the court file does not contain a corresponding complaint, which would normally detail allegations made by the plaintiff. The summons, a copy of which you'll find below, notes that the pair is seeking damages of at least $250,000. Brad Rose, a lawyer for the couple, refused to answer any questions about the May 17 summons or whether a lawsuit had been drafted. In Touch officials have been served with the summons, but have not received the complaint, so editors are in the dark about their purported transgressions. (2 pages)
