LIZ CLAIBORNE DIES AT AGE 78

Liz Claiborne, the designer of indefatigable career clothes for professional women entering the workforce en masse beginning in the 1970s, died Tuesday in Manhattan. She was 78.

Her death, at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, was caused by complications of cancer, said Arthur Ortenberg, her husband. Ms. Claiborne learned in 1997 that she had a rare form of cancer that affects the lining of the abdomen.

She had homes in Manhattan and the Saltaire section of Fire Island, N.Y., and on a large farm in Swan Valley, Mont.

Kelly Clarkson's Agent Demanded $15 Million Advance
It's always about money, isn't it?

The Kelly Clarkson saga at RCA Records continues, even as the "American Idol" winner's "My December" album looks poised for a No. 1 or No. 2 debut next week with up to 320,000 copies sold.

When we first reported that Kelly had fired manager Jeff Kwatinetz of The Firm, it was because he had allegedly made himself the bad guy in an ongoing feud between Clarkson and RCA.
Now, sources tell me that Kwatinetz actually demanded a $15 million advance for Clarkson from RCA last summer.

That was the beginning of the bad blood, since the singer was turning in an album the label didn't like. Kwatinetz, I am told, was soundly rebuffed. Clarkson received a much more reasonable $1.5 million advance.

RCA has put more money into the project, even though we all know that Clive Davis does not approve of "My December."

I am told that the video for "Never Again," the first single, cost $600,000, and that another $300,000 was spent on promoting it to radio stations. But "Never Again" didn't chart well or get much airplay anywhere.

You would think RCA would say "never again" themselves, but this week they are following Clarkson's wishes and putting out a second single, "Sober."

It's a terrible track, which contains the refrain: "It's been three months and I'm sober." This is not considered a "summer" record at a time when more than a few Kelly Clarkson fans are spending three months getting drunk.

"But this is what Kelly wanted, and we're going with her wishes," an RCA insider said.
It won't matter. As the label's people say: Clarkson is a pop star. She isn't Joan Jett. There will be euphoria next week when she's No. 1, but in weeks two, three and four when the album fades away, no one will remember that.

Indeed, RCA shipped 850,000 copies of "My December" and doesn't expect to need more.
Kwatinetz, by the way, is held responsible for Clarkson's tour plans being scuttled.
"He booked her into arenas that she couldn't possibly have sold out, instead of 2,000 or 3,000 seat theaters," a source said. "He really blew it."

Despite all the ruckus over "My December," Clarkson won't be leaving RCA any time soon.
"We have a long term deal with her," a source said. "We're in the Kelly Clarkson business for a long time. If she wants to come back and make a big hit record next time, we're here."

First the Spice Girls announce reunion plans - now The Verve are back together. Tha Mayor is in a 90's British-Invasion HEAVEN! 'Tiswas, here we come!

According to a post on the group's newly launched Web
site (http://www.theverve.tv/), Richard Ashcroft, Nick
McCabe, Simon Jones and Pete Salisbury were in a
London studio last week laying down tracks for the
album, which will be completed in the fall.

The Verve will then return to the stage for six U.K.
shows in November: November 2-3 at Glasgow's Academy,
November 5-6 at Blackpool's Empress Ballroom and
November 8-9 at London's Roundhouse. It appears
guitarist/keyboardist Simon Tong, who was last heard
from in the Good, the Bad and the Queen, is sitting
out the reunion.

The Verve rose to fame internationally in the early
'90s with a sound psychedelic enough for adventurous
listeners but palatable to commercial radio as well.
Internal tensions finally splintered the band in the
wake of 1997's U.S. breakthrough "Urban Hymns," which
has sold 1.34 million copies, according to Nielsen
SoundScan, and spawned the megahit "Bittersweet
Symphony."

Ashcroft has since released three solo albums but has
frequently played Verve songs in his live sets.

PARIS' FIRST DAY OF FREEDOM------

Paris spent her first day of freedom Tuesday in her family's Bel-Air mansion, receiving visitors and gifts of flowers and balloons. "She's very happy to be home – very, very happy," said her aunt, Kyle Richards, who arrived with her two daughters. Richards said Hilton planned to relax and "spend family time." "I think she's just excited to be at home and be with her family," Richards added.

Hilton, 26, walked out of jail at about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday after serving 23 days for violating her probation in an alcohol-related driving case. The heiress smiled and waved, then embraced her mother, before being driven away from the jail in Lynwood, Calif. She spent the night at the Hilton family compound, where an army of reporters and photographers were camped outside.

Pink balloons were delivered to the house, as was a white frosted cake with the words "Welcome Home" written on it. No word on who sent the goodies. Pink hydrangeas, yellow lilies and pink roses valued at $200 were also delivered by Urban Florists Tuesday afternoon. A family friend told PEOPLE Tuesday morning: "She has been missing her pets a lot. And she loves fast food. She's looking forward to In-N-Out Burger and Taco Bell."

Later in the day, two Taco Bell reps arrived at the mansion and announced they had a delivery of four bags of food from Paris to the media. They then handed out taquitos and chips to everyone, including police officers.

In Touch Weekly reports in their new issue that Nicole and boyfriend Joel Madden visited the Barnes & Noble store near his Glendale, California, home on June 18th.

“They looked for a while in the children’s section,” a store employee confirms.
“They were in the children’s section looking at baby books,” says fellow shopper Ruth Suarez. “They were holding hands and seemed like a really cute couple.”

Suarez, who was with her 1-year-old grandson, Nathan, says Nicole couldn’t have been sweeter.

Mom Says Lindsay Will Do 'Extended Care' Program

lindsay lohan has been "doing great" since she checked into rehab over Memorial Day weekend, her mother says. "I talk to her every day," Dina Lohan told PEOPLE in New York on Monday. "She's going to do Promises' extended care program." The program, according to Promises' Web site, is designed to help people "make the transition from residential alcohol or drug rehab treatment back into their community."

It includes a 12-step program and group therapy. Dina also said she and her family will head west for Lindsay's 21st birthday on July 2. She didn't say where the celebration will be held – a previously scheduled party in Las Vegas was canceled – but her security guard Ty Dux said, "It won't be on the Promises premises."

Dina Lohan was appearing in Nassau County family court as she awaited a hearing in her ongoing dispute over visitation of her children with ex-husband Michael, who was also in court. "I just want to move on," said Dina, who has an order of protection against Michael. "It takes its toll on myself and the children. It affects all of us." Michael was released from prison in March after a 25-month lockup for charges that included DUI and assaulting his brother-in-law. Asked on Monday if she were afraid of Michael, Dina Lohan answered, "Yes."

SIMMONE Jade MacKinnon, star of McLeod's Daughters, has been rocked by news the man she was set to marry has allegedly fathered a child with former Cosby Show actress, Lisa Bonet.

MacKinnon, a Gold Logie nominee, was due to marry actor Jason Momoa this year, but shocked friends and colleagues when the pair ended their affair abruptly last December.

The couple, who were together for seven years, were planning to wed in Hawaii after Jason proposed in 2004.

But news of Bonet's pregnancy has now raised eyebrows as to why Momoa may have called off his relationship with the Aussie TV star last year.

Bonet, 39, has been snapped strolling through flea markets in Pasadena, California looking heavily pregnant.

MacKinnon, who met Momoa on the set of Baywatch in 1999, told Confidential she was ``upset'' by news of Bonet's pregnancy.

"Honestly, it's a shock and of course this news has been upsetting,'' she said.

This is all bullshit . doors opened at 6.45 on monday and I had two support acts . Anyone who thought i was going on earlier , im sorry you were missinformed . I would never turn up two hours late for a gig .......EVER . id been in my dressing room since four o'clock that afternoon anyway its not as if id leave 3000 people out there for no reason . I did apologise to everyone for forgetting my words on " not big " , and I also explained that it was a psychological thing that happens to me on stage . I guess its like premature ejaculation , the second you start thinking about it the second it all goes wrong . I actually thought it was a really good gig and really enjoyed myself . I did not get drunk but your right i did smoke a ciggarette on stage , and for that i should have apologised . After the gig i went to the "spotted pig" with my friends and various members of my family , it was really busy so a few of us left and went to the beatrice inn , this nonsense about josh hartnett is exactly that . nonsense

on saturday morning i cancelled a gig in austin , and i really am sorry for doing that I dont think I have ever cancelled a gig the same day as a show before , i was ill , i wont go into the details as it's a bit gross , but if I had gone , i wouldnt have been able to sing . That satuday I stayed at home of course because i was ill . On SUNDAY however I slept all day and then went out for dinner with my dear friend Kim on our way home we dropped into this place called Porkys , if you had read above you would think Im a total asshole . I would never ask to even be sat at a vip table . I went to Kanye Wests birthday party last week and there was this kind of red carpet where the celebrities pose for pictures before they go in . The publicist girl turned to me and sort of ushered me down and asked me to pose , i was petrified they'd all start asking me who I was , not take a picture and then start laughing at me . And i dont believe in VIP anyway , so why the hell would I want to sit in a vip area with a bunch of people who think they are more important than anyone else . And I mean please , come on enough about me supposedly hating Amy now , its boring and untrue. Oh and by the way I don't have "people" i was with emily my friend of 15 years , kim my friend of 5 years . That jason preston guy wasn't even with us .

PARIS' "MEDICAL CONDITION IS STABLE"

Paris Hilton was transferred out of the medical center at L.A.'s Twin Towers Correctional Facility and back into the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood, Calif., on Wednesday night, with authorities saying she's in "stable" condition. The facility is the same place the 26-year-old heiress began her sentence on June 3. She is scheduled to be released June 25, according to Sheriff's Department spokesperson Steve Whitmore.

The Kelly Clarkson summer tour, which was rumored to be on the ropes, has been shelved “for now” as “the singer and her team re-evaluate her show’s size and scope—a decision made even more difficult by the impending release of her album, My December, June 24.”

Earlier this week, the very first Idol winner split with her manager, The Firm’s Jeff Kwatinetz, amid the media controversy swirling over the direction of the new disc, penned mostly by Clarkson herself, which started with the tepid radio reception to the first single, “Never Again.”

The tour was to have started July 11 in Portland. Clarkson is still scheduled to perform at the historic Live Earth Show July 7 performance at Giants Stadium in New Jersey.
In a statement on her website, Kelly wrote: "I can't tell you how much I've been looking forward to getting out there to perform for y'all. In the craziness of the music business, performing is what I look forward to doing the most, so it really is disappointing for me to have to tell you that I won't be coming out to tour this summer. The fact is that touring is just too much too soon. But I promise you that we're going to get back out there as soon as is humanly possible to give you a show that will be even better. Thanks for all of your love and continued support."
Said LiveNation CEO Michael Rapino, who was promoting the tour: “It is mind-blowing when you stop to think about what Kelly Clarkson has achieved during her young career. But ticket sales have not been what we anticipated and we came to the realization that we had bit off more than we could chew. In the end, we are in the Kelly Clarkson business and for that reason we believe that this decision will only benefit her and her fans in the long run.”

Added Another Planet CEO Gregg Perloff: “Kelly is a spectacular artist and an incredible performer who undoubtedly has what it takes to sustain a long and prosperous career. "I just found out from a mutual friend that guys will talk to Jay first before they try to approach me," Rihanna, 19, told PEOPLE at a Venus Breeze event in New York City (her gams were named this year's "Celebrity Legs of a Goddess").

Rihanna, whose third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, features her hit duet with Jay-Z, "Umbrella," says she appreciates the rapper looking out for her.

"He's very protective," she says of her mentor, who discovered her and signed her to his Def Jam label. "Jay has my best interests in mind. If it's a good guy I know Jay won't shut him down. But if he's not, Jay will be like, 'No, no, no.' "

And exactly who are the guys trying to court Rihanna? "He actually never tells me. I have no clue who they are and I guess I'll never know," she says.

The singer, who says she received many compliments from her male fans after showing off her newly toned figure at the MTV Movie Awards last week, admits that her busy schedule makes dating difficult, but hopes to "get a date in sometime soon."

The Barbados-born chanteuse says she prefers "tall guys who have a sense of humor, love to laugh, have a good time and good conversation," and describes her idea of a good date as "low key, just hanging out and watching a movie."

REAL WORLD'S FRANKIE DIES AT 25

Frankie Abernathy -- the punked-out, boat-phobic rock chick of MTV's "Real World: San Diego" fame -- died at the age of 25 on Saturday at her mother's home in Shorewood, Wisc.

Abernathy suffered from cystic fibrosis, though an official cause of death has yet to be determined, according to MTV News. During her stint in the "Real World" house, Frankie exhibited symptoms of cystic fibrosis, such as difficulty breathing and immune-system impairment, and it was a significant part of her storyline on the show.

Frankie had some tumultuous times on the show, and ended up leaving the house before the end of the season.

A very good friend of Tha Mission recently went to St. Martin. Upon arrival, he entered into his villa and discovered that Miss Mariah was leaving the same villa. She kindly said hello, told him she had been there for a month relaxing, then hopped on her G5 back to the States. Apparently, Mimi looked slim, tan and happy. Later in the week, the private chef divulged that for the entire month of her stay, the chef was required to prepare a meal every two hours - and no two meals could be the same for the entire month. More often then not, she didnt eat the food, and it had to be thrown out.
Its not nice to waste food, Mimi. there are starving children around the world. now go adopt one to make up for it.
