DURAN DURAN TO HIT BROADWAY

DURAN DURAN have announced that they will play an unprecedented nine shows on Broadway to celebrate the release of their forthcoming album, 'Red Carpet Massacre', which is due out November 12 in Europe and the UK and a day later in the US.

The band, which features original members Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor, intend to play the new album in its entirety, as well as classics such as 'Rio', 'Hungry Like The Wolf' and 'Ordinary World', during their Broadway stint.

The band will perform at New York's Barrymore Theatre November 1- 3, 5-6, 8-10 and 12.

Tickets are set to go on sale October 6 through Telecharge.

Ja spoke with Spinner recently and this is what he had to say about things.

Let's get to this straightaway: You caused quite a bit of controversy with your comments in Complex magazine, saying - and I'm paraphrasing - that homosexuality is what's wrong with America. Is it accurate to say that you suffer from some degree of homophobia?

I'm a very avid speaker for all people's rights and people having their own preference. I was taken out of context. My statement was more about where our mind state is as a people. We're focused on the wrong things - like, our country is at war right now. These things are more of a problem to me. Like another case I just read about - young ladies being raped by six white men. These are the stories that should be popping up on my TV screen. That's what I was talking about, and somehow it got spun into some other s-.

How would you react if one of your kids told you that he or she was gay?

That's their own preference. I'm going to love them regardless. I have relatives that are homosexuals and, you know, they come over for Christmas, hang out. It's something that starts with us. That's why my album is named 'The Mirror' - because everybody has to look at themselves and take it upon themselves to educate. It's my responsibility to educate my children - not the TV. I think a visual is more influential than audio, but that goes without being said. You know, that's the world we live in and people are tight in the collar about a lot of issues. It is what it is.

Where do you stand on gay marriage?

It's really not my business. I really could care less. It's not something that bothers me.

GEORGE CLOONEY and girlfriend Sarah Larson were treated at the hospital Friday for injuries after the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a car in New Jersey.

Clooney, 46, suffered a hairline fracture of a rib and road rash, and Larson, 28, suffered a broken foot.

They were treated at Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, N.J., and released.

BRITNEY CHARGED WITH HIT AND RUN

Britney Spears has just been slapped with "hit and run" charges, as well as driving with no license.  The charges stem from a fender bender that Brit had back on August 6th when she hit a parked car.  Britney is due in court on October 10th, where she will be arraigned on the charges.  She Faces up to 6 months in jail if convicted.

Mary-Louise Parker Adopts a Child from Africa

Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker has adopted a baby girl from Africa, her reps confirmed.

Parker, who was nominated for two Emmy awards Sunday night, was spotted with her new daughter over the weekend as they traveled to the show.

The actress's reps declined to reveal any more information about the adoption.

Parker, 43, also has a 3-year-old son, Will, with actor Billy Crudup, 39. The couple split before Will was born.

"There are a lot of things I just would not attempt, but taking care of someone - I know how to do," she said. "I know how to do that and I enjoy doing that."

K FED TO GET TEMPORARY CUSTODY!!!!

pqnqwMonday was one of the worst days Britney Spears has had in a long time, and she’s had some pretty bad ones recently.
First, her lawyer quit. Then her manager dropped her. And, finally, the day ended for her with Fox News reporting that Spears will lose temporary custody of her two kids.
The news network claims that the Los Angeles Family Court received new information over the weekend and based on that and all the info they already have, they will give full custody (albeit temporary) to KFed.
The ruling is expected to be handed down shortly.

HAPPY 10TH YEAR, BUTTERFLY !

 

10 YEARS AGO TODAY. September 16, 1997, Mariah released her 6th studio album, "Butterfly." The release of this album is in hindsight one of the (if not the) biggest turning points in Mariah's career.

For the first 6 years of her musical career, Mariah has established herself as a successful pop artist, a great vocalist who was known for her wide vocal range, her ability to hold long notes during her famous power ballads, showcasing big belts and vocal acrobatics in her recordings and live performances, and releasing radio-friendly hits with sugary lyrics and catchy pop hooks.

At the downside, Mariah was critically attacked for being formulaic, and was often criticized for the use of "melisma" in her singing. Extreme naysayers went as far as accrediting her success to her discoverer (and then husband) Tommy Mottola and song-writing partner/producer Walter Afanasieff.

"Butterfly" changed everything

"Butterfly" came out two years after the release of one of Mariah's biggest selling albums to date - "Daydream" (20 million records sold worldwide). During the break between the albums, Mariah endured several personal changes which would later affect her public image and career.

Mariah, who everyone thought of as "the girl next door" decided to finally reveal who she really was. At the risk of losing a great deal of her target audience (and as a result, a good portion of her record sales), Mariah reinvented herself both musically and personally.

"I've definitely gone through a lot of personal changes and a lot of professional changes throughout the course of...process of recording this album, much more so than on any other record that I've done."

In 1997, Mariah set herself free from her marriage (which was later only referred by her as "the situation" for years) by separating from her then husband Tommy Mottola. The move was extremely brave of her, considering the fact Mottola was the head executive of her record label Sony and had a considerable influence on Mariah's releases under the label. In addition, she replaced her professional team including her manager, lawyer and publicist.

Mariah also went through a public image change which was noticeable particularly in her clothing choices, new friends in the industry and seeming much more comfortable and outspoken in interviews. Fans surely remember Mariah's Entertainment Weekly cover story, her MTV's VMA appearance, and the premiere of the "Honey" video in August 1997.



Mariah best described her change when talking about the "Honey" video: "This video is actually much more of my personality than any other video I've done. I'm Mary Poppins in every other video and this time I'm... who am I this time? I'm the bond girl. But compared to what a lot of other people do, I think it's still pretty mild, you have to give me that. I didn't suddenly become a freak overnight."

The biggest and perhaps the most important change however, was in Mariah's music. Inspired by her favorite Hip-Hop acts and going back to her urban roots, Mariah teamed up with established as well as up and coming Hip-Hop artists and producers to work on "Butterfly." Though she had previously worked with O.D.B ("Fantasy" remix), Jermaine Dupri and Da Brat ("Always Be My Baby" remix), never has a heavily oriented Hip-Hop track appeared on a Mariah album before.

"Butterfly" more than made up for it. While its credits show a very extensive list of names (Sean "Puffy" Combs, Q-Tip, Stevie J, The Trackmasters, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Missy Elliott, Dru Hill), "Butterfly" remains a perfectly cohesive and a wonderfully sequenced album. If you ask yourself why, the answer is easy: the consistency is in its theme and more importantly, in its quality.

Among fans, the album is known to have some of Mariah's most personal and detailed lyrics. She writes about love - lost, fulfilled, desired ("My All", "The Roof", "Honey"), she yearns for her lover in "Babydoll" ("Zoning out, thinking about you and me between the sheets"), she exposes stories about her tough childhood and difficulty fitting in ("Close My Eyes", "Outside") and sings about a metaphorical butterfly in the ever appropriate title track.



It isn't just the lyrics that make "Butterfly" so varied and enjoyable. This album introduces Mariah's "whispery" vocals ("Fourth of July") which would play a big part in her future recordings and yet she still delivers her powerful belts and the admired ballads ("Whenever You Call"). In "Breakdown," Mariah effortlessly adapts the staccato singing style of "Bone Thugs-N-Harmony" as she sings about getting over a breakup; and in the cover to Prince's "The Beautiful Ones," Mariah gives us her soulful interpretation of the song.

"Butterfly" may not be Mariah's best selling album but many of her fans consider it more than just a turning point, but an important milestone in her career. Mariah lets us know her as deep as one can by listening to music. She invites us to experience her journey and celebrate her freedom. 10 years after their release, the songs from "Butterfly" are still popular and relevant to today's music which makes it easy to call "Butterfly" a timeless album and in retrospect say it was ahead of its time.

O.J. Simpson was arrested today on charges related to an armed robbery involving sport memorabilia, police said.

Simpson was arrested shorty after 11 a.m. and is being brought to a police office, Capt. James Dillon said. Police are still determining charges against Simpson. Police officers were seen entering the hotel where Simpson is staying; a security guard said police took Simpson out a side door shortly after.

At least one other person has been arrested and police said earlier Sunday that as many as six people could be arrested in connection with the alleged armed robbery that occurred in a room inside the Palace Station casino-hotel on Thursday.

Simpson, 60, has said he and other people with him were retrieving items that belonged to him. He told police no guns were involved.

Police said two firearms and other evidence were seized at a private residence early Sunday.

THA MEETING: BRIT AND K-FED

Her return appearance at the MTV Video Music awards left Britney Spears's comeback up in the air. But the pop star seems intent on putting to rest her custody issues with her ex, Kevin Federline.

Spears, 25, attended an unscheduled meeting with Federline, 29, and his attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan Wednesday. The exes arrived separately to the Century City offices of Spears's attorney Laura Wasser. The meeting fell on son Jayden's first birthday and five days before they are due to face each other before a family court judge on Monday.

The meeting was Spears's idea according to a source close to her. "Britney asked for [the meeting]. She wants to put an end to this public debacle," says the Spears source. "However, Kevin [has] refused. He needs more money so he's determined to win this."

Court documents released Aug. 30 show that Spears's income is $737,868 a month and that Ferderline receives $20,000 a month in spousal support but has no "net income after business expenses."

A source close to Federline confirmed the meeting, but said that Federline was not drawing out the process due to financial self-interest. "He's not going for additional child support in the court papers that were filed. It's not about the money."

When asked if Spears was hoping to settle, the Federline source retorted: "She might settle, she's got stage fright."

Spears's Vegas weekend featured eight party-hopping nightclub excursions and one disastrous nationally televised dance number. She has kept a low profile since returning to Los Angeles Monday.

CNN reports that The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced Wednesday that Stewart will host the 80th awards show February 24 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Oscar telecast producer Gil Cates described Stewart as smart, quick and funny. He said Stewart loves movies and is a great guy. Stewart got mixed reviews when he hosted the 78th annual awards. Some jokes fell flat and some critics expected the political satirist to be edgier. Stewart joked that he is thrilled to be asked for a second time, because the third time is a charm.

Britney Spears's Hairdresser Quit Before VMA Performance

Before her now-notorious performance at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas, Britney Spears had a spat with celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves, PEOPLE reports in its latest issue, on newsstands Friday.

Weeks before the awards show, "Britney had requested his two female assistants [to do her extensions] since she prefers women around her," and was disappointed when Paves himself arrived, says a Spears source. The stylist soon left, taking his hair with him.

"He bailed," says the source. Says Paves's rep: "Ken made the professional decision not to do her hair for the VMAs."

That wasn't Spears's only problem - there was also a wardrobe flap. An MTV rep says costumers picked out a form-flattering corset for her to wear, but Spears chose a bikini instead.

According to the National Enquirer Oprah Winfrey has allotted $30 million dollars of her fortune to take care of all of her animals if they outlive her.  It sounds like a lot, but thats pennies compared to Oprah's estimated $4 billion dollar net worth.

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson has joined the cast of "Sex and the City: The Movie," which begins filming next week in New York.

Hudson will play the assistant to Sarah Jessica Parker's character, Carrie Bradshaw, in the film based on the hit HBO comedy series.

In July, the show's four leads, including Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, came aboard for the film after New Line Cinema agreed to finance and distribute it. Chris Noth also joined the cast to reprise his role as Mr. Big.

Michael Patrick King is writing and directing.

Hudson, who won an Oscar for her supporting role in "Dreamgirls," recently completed production on the ensemble drama "Winged Creatures" starring Kate Beckinsale, Forrest Whitaker, Jackie Earle Haley and Dakota Fanning. Sony is distributing the film.

The former "American Idol" contestant is also in the studio working on her debut album for Arista Records, due for release in the first quarter of 2008.

Britney Spears has no one to blame but herself for her disastrous performance at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night. The lip-synching pop tart showed up for her big comeback late, unprepared and with a drink in her hand. On Saturday, the day before the VMAs, Spears was scheduled to arrive at rehearsal at around 1 p.m. Our spy said, "She didn't even get to Las Vegas until 4:30 p.m. It was ridiculous . . . The production people at MTV were freaking out . . . Nobody can tell Britney what to do anymore. No one can control her. She is a mess."

To make matters worse, when she arrived in Vegas, Spears didn't go straight to rehearsals. "She went to her hotel room and ordered a bunch of food and some frozen margaritas," the spy said. "She came down, like, an hour later with a frozen margarita in her hand."

When Spears preformed on Sunday, she stumbled a couple times and couldn't remember the words she was lip-syncing. She covered her mouth at one point but by the end of the song had simply given up any pretense of singing. "The dance number was spectacular - without her," said our spy at rehearsal. "When the stand-in was rehearsing with the dancers, in the hours they were all waiting for her, it was amazing. Then Britney showed up and refused to do anything. The dancers were supposed to lift and twirl her in the air a few times, and that just wasn't going to happen. The more complicated dance moves had to be erased because she couldn't do them."

Meanwhile, Spears was agitated because she didn't like the outfit MTV had selected for her. "MTV wanted her to wear a corset outfit. It would have looked great and covered a lot of things up, but she hated it and didn't think it was sexy enough." Instead, Spears changed into a spangly bra-and-underwear outfit she'd brought with her that emphasized her weight gain over the last year.

MTV execs weren't the only ones worried about Spears' impending debacle. Another spy said, "The dancers were texting pals, asking them to pray for them. They were worried." After Spears performed at the VMAs, she allegedly broke down in tears but then partied until 3 a.m. She changed outfits several times and again was photographed by paparazzi wearing no underwear.
A rep for Spears didn't return e-mails.

The title of the long-awaited fourth installment of the adventure series was announced by Shia LaBeouf, who co-stars with Ford in the film, at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday. The new Indy adventure, which is set in the 1950s, also stars Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Jim Broadbent and Karen Allen. Sean Connery, who played dad to Ford's globe-trotting archaeologist in 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," will not reprise the role in the new movie.
